A Change in the Weather
Our September Centerpiece Emily Bronte: This Dark Night by Deborah Lutz, Friday, September 18, 6PM
Because I spend much of the summer season anticipating fall, (I know... I know... be here now : ( September brings a renewed sense of clarity for me. I'm excited to be back to school; back to work; in the bookstore or the classroom, -- both are sacred spaces to me.
But I realize too that it's not so for everyone as the summer slips away. The gardener reflects upon a somewhat less clear or more melancholy proposition, for "where had stood a garden/ straining to the light, there grew/an acceptance of decline." That’s the great poet, Wendell Berry, who passed away on August 31st , writing in one of his masterpiece’s “September 2” about the surrender to the natural cycle we each inevitably face with…well…a change in the weather.
But I cherish the return of the cooler air, and hope it brings you, too, a sense of renewed purpose, clarity of vision, and a generosity of spirit that somehow (I'm never quite sure how) puts a spring in your step as we each go on our way, and, hopefully, at some point this month, in the direction of the bookstore!
We have lots on tap this month, so we hope you are able to include us in your plans.
For one, we turn 3 years old this month. Technically, 9/16, BUT we will be offering up the bubbly all day on Thursday, September 17th to celebrate our third bookstore birthday. Three is a magical number, by tha way, multiples of nine, etc, etc, so we’ll be handing out wands to keep the magic alive and hoping these send you all out into the world wrapped in our love and gratitude for your incredible support these past few years. This has been such a shared venture from the start, so happy birthday bebes! I know I’ve said it, but I’m gonna say it again ;) Nox est perpetua una dormienda
The centerpiece of our month is the return of NYT bestselling author and scholar Deborah Lutz to Blue Heron Books to discuss all things Emily Bronte in her superb biography EMILY BRONTE: This Dark Night (W.W. Norton 2026) (and I mean allll things… did a certain someone named Margaret Drabble say sadomasochism?) Come to the bookstore on Friday, September 18th at 6PM to find out!

Help us celebrate High Falls Food Co-op’s 50th Anniversary!! Saturday, September 19th, Noon to 3PM, food, drink, live music, vendors, tastings, fun, and community; gathering on Second Street, in High Falls! We’ll have a table at the shop celebrating with cookbooks on nourishing, healthy, delicious foods — all the things that we have been sourcing for the last 50 years from our beloved High Falls Food Co-op!
Also, we’re included on the High Falls Business Bingo Card, come through to pick up an entry form; no purchase necessary; fill out your Bingo Card and hand it in at either Green Cottage, High Falls Food Co-op, or the High Falls Post Office, and let tha chips fall where they may! ;) Winners will be announced at the High Falls Food Co-op’s 50th Anniversary celebration on Saturday, September 19th.
